Our Java practice is concentrated in one place and it is substantial: five Java developers, 10,600 hours since 2024, on a consumer fintech platform that is still running with us. That is the kind of engagement Java tends to mean in practice — a system handling money, audited, with uptime expectations, where the interesting problems are correctness and operability rather than framework choice.

We have not closed enough external Java roles to publish a median, so treat five to seven weeks as the planning assumption — that is what recruiting from the market averages across our stacks. Where we can move faster is by rotating an engineer from the existing Java team onto your project, which we will offer if the timing works.

Java work is usually long-lived and integration-heavy, which makes continuity worth more than the rate. The systems accumulate domain rules, batch jobs, and integrations that live in the team as much as in the code. Our Java engagement has run with the same five people since 2024 — that is the arrangement to look for, rather than a vendor who rebuilds the team each quarter.

Backends where reliability and auditability outrank iteration speed, which in our case has meant financial systems.

Java when the surrounding ecosystem — libraries, hiring pool, ops tooling — matters more than language ergonomics, which is common in finance. Kotlin when the team is greenfield and wants a lighter syntax on the same JVM; the two interoperate, so this is rarely a hard boundary. Off the JVM entirely is a bigger decision and usually driven by the rest of your stack rather than by the language.

Around five engineers, which is what our current Java engagement runs. Java projects are seldom one-developer work: there is usually a service layer, integrations, and a batch or reporting surface, and splitting those across a small team is what keeps releases moving. We staff to the work and scale down when the system reaches maintenance.
